Why we support this project
Over 21 million native mallee trees have been planted on land previously cleared for dryland cropping and grazing. This large-scale reforestation effort is registered under the Carbon Farming Initiative and subsequently the Emissions Reduction Fund. As part of these programs, the project is committed to maintaining the reforested area for a minimum of 100 years.
According to the Australian Government Clean Energy Regulator, environmental planting project have benefits including:
- Restoring degraded land
- Protecting soils from wind erosion by reducing wind speeds
- Ecosystem health
- Improving water quality through reduced pesticide and fertilizer run
Real and Lasting Impact
Permanence: 100 years is the permanence period chosen for this project. In line with the methodology, any growth disturbance events, such as disease or fire, within the project area must be monitored and recorded. Infill planting (i.e. replacing project trees that have died) may be undertaken if plantings die. Project plantings are established an maintained to be a permanent planting and with sufficient planting density so the trees have potential to achieve forest cover. Satellite analysis of the project shows evidence of success of the plantings and some forest cover already. As with all sequestration projects registered under the ERF, there is a 5% risk of reversal buffer which acts as insurance mechanism.
Additionality: Additionality and the baseline scenario are determined in accordance with the methodology of this project. The project area must include land which has forest potential but was unable to achieve forest cover in the 5 years before project commencement. In line with the methodology, the baseline carbon stock is the amount of carbon the CEA of the project would have had in the absence of the project, and is taken as zero. As per the methodology, this project must also demonstrate that it is not required to be carried out under a law of the Commonwealth, state or territory government. As this project meets these requirements, it can be concluded that the project is additional.
